Research Profile

1. What is your breast cancer specialty?

General breast cancer patients, particularly young breast cancer patients

2. Why is this an important part of breast cancer care?

More young patients are being diagnosed with breast cancer and they have a unique set of issues including reproductive concerns and hormonal issues.

3. How is this different then what might be offered in the community (outside of UC Irvine )?

UC Irvine offers a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of breast cancer patients.  A patient would not only have access to a surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist who collaborate with each other, but would also be able to see a genetic counselor and ob/gyn specialists when necessary.

4. What will my (the patient) experience be like?

At UC Irvine the goal is to take care of the entire patient and meet all her needs including surgical and adjuvant therapy as well as any psychological support the patient may need.  The patient will have very close, integrated follow-up with communication between the specialties to ensure that the whole patient is well cared for.

5. What current studies, or novel options within your specialty are currently available?

We are constantly improving our surgical techniques and can offer the best plastic surgery techniques when appropriate.
