Laser Breast Scanner (LBS)

Researchers at UC Irvine have developed a new non-invasive diagnostic technique for breast cancer called the Laser Breast Scanner (LBS). The goal of this study is to develop a safe and inexpensive device that uses near-infrared lasers on the breast, which may complement and enhance existing mammograms. The LBS exam, however, cannot be used as a substitute for mammograms or biopsies since the LBS exam in still in the investigational stage. This study may lead to a new technique to detect breast cancer, prevent unnecessary surgery, and monitor the effectiveness of existing therapy.
